Cowboys’ defense dashes Dak Prescott, own playoff hopes

The Cowboys did their best to upgrade defensively with offseason salary-cap limitations, using their first three draft picks to try to bolster their weakest positions at defensive end (Taco Charlton) and cornerback (Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis). But they’ve regressed in that area.

“When you have a lot of young guys on the team, I think discipline is needed,” said the 27-year-old Jackson, who joined the Jaguars in 2016 after a Super Bowl-winning season with the Broncos. “As an older guy, maybe not as much as they’re giving, but I see why we need it and I see where we’re going, so I’m not complaining.”

Jackson, though, does admit having to bite his tongue after enduring a grueling training camp practice schedule.

“I was actually having a conversation with (Marrone) last week about how tough it was, but then I have to give him some praise because I’m doing very well right now in the season,” said Jackson, who is a half-sack away from matching his career high of six with four games remaining. “At the moment, you’re like, ‘Aww, this is BS.’ But he has a greater goal in mind and he can see the future. I’m glad we stuck with him and I’m glad I followed him.”

Meanwhile, ESPN is quietly declining to renew the contracts of some “SportsCenter” anchors such as Sarina Morales. These folks are not technically part of the layoffs, but they’re out the door in Bristol just the same.

Brees had driven the Saints (9-4) to the Falcons 11-yard line, but his second-down pass to backup tight end Josh Hill was picked by Jones.

The win by the Falcons (8-5) not only keeps them alive for a playoff berth, but allows them to stay in the hunt for the NFC South title. If the Falcons win out, they will win the division, but a second matchup with the Saints in New Orleans on Christmas Eve looms.
