There are obvious situations in which teams should keep their points

There are obvious situations in which teams should keep their points — to tie or take the lead in a close game, for one — but early in a game, when the only goal should be to score as many points as possible, coaches need to be open to the idea of leaving their offense on the field to score a touchdown. Since kickers are better than ever before and turnover rates are at their lowest since 1932, the chances are slim that an offense will take three off the board and end up with zero.

These numbers account for the risk of Justin Faulk Jersey turning the ball over or not scoring at all versus the reward of scoring a touchdown. In a vacuum, when you expect to score more than three points from a given yard line, you should wipe the field goal off the board and go back out on offense. Just about every feasible situation in which you would be kicking a field goal seems to suggest that taking the points off Nathan Gerbe Jersey of the board is the superior option. Even if you are conservative and have an subpar field goal kicker, a new set of downs would most likely get you inside the 30-yard line. Send your quarterback back out there, coach.

Never throw when you’re running a four-minute offense to kill clock.

His team has made the playoffs for 25 consecutive seasons, a streak unheard of in hockey these days. In all of sports, really. Holland wants a 26th. He just wasn’t willing to concede the Eastern Conference to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals or Pittsburgh Penguins — or willing to make way for young teams making strides in the East like the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres.

So when Pavel Datsyuk left after 14 seasons as a Wing, Holland replaced him with Frans Nielsen. When he saw a weakness in his team’s power play, Holland addressed it by adding Thomas Vanek. The GM thought his dressing room needed more personality and spark. Enter Steve Ott, who has both oozing from his pores. Constantly.

A rebuild? No thanks. That’s not something Holland is interested in undertaking.

Defenseman Mike Green, right — who notched his first career hat trick in the Red Wings’ home opener — and young star Dylan Larkin have teamed up to lead Detroit to a 6-2-0 start in their second season together.

“There are no guarantees with rebuilds,” Holland said after the Red Wings practiced on Wednesday. “There are no guarantees you’re going to come out the other side and you’re going to be elite.”

Rarely do playoff teams initiate their own rebuild. Rebuilds are the result of a team petering out for some reason, a franchise that has reached the end of the line. Not a team with a rich history of success that is the result of decades instilling a culture of winning and playing the right way into every player who enters the organization.

Chicago, for example, won a Stanley Cup with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews still playing on their entry-level deals. Then they got matching contracts for five years and $6.3 million. Then came the monster deals worth $10.5 million per season. To land those players, Chicago fans had to endure a decade in which the Blackhawks made the playoffs just once. Teams don’t have to do that anymore.

The Eagles extended ageless Darren Sproles

EAGLES EXTEND SPROLES: Darren Sproles, Eagles agree on contract extension. It’s a one-year deal worth $4.5 million that locks up Sproles through next season.

Recently, the NFL reinstated Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, suspending him for the first four games of 2016 in the process. They will allow him to play in 2016 despite his fourth suspension in as many years for failed drug tests, provided he doesn’t draw the ire of the league between now and the Browns’ fifth regular season game.

It’s not specifically stated that Roger Goodell’s decision is based on drug tests, but it’s a safe bet that further failures likely would have prevented his reinstatement to the NFL. Jordan made strong statements about his desire to get his career turned around, and the reinstatement indicates he avoided further transgressions.

“I’m not about to waste it. I can’t waste it. And I (expletive) love doing it,” Jordan told Tom Pelissero USA Today in May. “Who doesn’t love running out in front of 30,000-plus fans and you get that rush? But it’s also things that you can get that rush from that can be very satisfying and can carry you on to a successful life after football.

“I just turned 26 years old, so life starts to hit you in the face. Who are you outside of those shoulder pads and helmet? And it’s weird, but I feel like it’s a blessing for me at this point in time to think about it, instead of waiting ‘til they really tell me I can’t play football no more.”

The Dolphins are hoping that Jordan will be able to help Cameron Wake and Mario Williams, who are 34 and 31 years old, respectively, will be able to get to opposing quarterbacks. Andre Branch, a free agent signing, is also expected to contribute as a rotational pass rusher.

Given the lack of promising young rushers on the Miami defense, Jordan will likely stick on the Dolphins roster and may have a strong chance at contributing immediately in his return.

Hall of Fame Game canceled due to unsafe field conditions

The Hall of Fame Game marks the start of the NFL preseason schedule, and this year’s edition between the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts was scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET from Canton, Ohio. However, poor field conditions led to the game being canceled.

The NFL and NFLPA released a joint statement regarding their decision to call off the game:

Due to safety concerns with the condition of the playing surface in Canton, tonight’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers has been cancelled. We are very disappointed for our fans, but player safety is our primary concern, and as Tyrone Crawford Jersey a result, we could not play an NFL game on this field tonight.?
Players first began expressing concern about the field during pregame warmups. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the field is as “hard as concrete,” and a shoddy paint job congealed with the Field Turf, making the end zones and midfield logo almost tar-like.

This creates an obvious injury risk for the players, in addition to the usual caution teams apply to preseason games. Neither team was planning to play their starters much, if at all (the Packers already planned to sit quarterback Aaron Rodgers), and the bad field conditions made coaches even less eager to send their players out there. With nothing at stake, the decision to cancel this game was an easy one in the end.

With no actual game being played, the two teams instead held a fan-fest activity on the field to try to placate those in attendance and give ESPN something to fill the TV time. The next day, the Pro Football Hall of Fame also announced that it would offer full refunds for anyone who purchased tickets to the canceled game.

An old-school battering ram of a linebacker, Ragland was thought to be a first-round pick by many but fell to the second round. The Bills didn’t let him slip too far though, and traded up to No. 41 in the draft order to take the 2015 SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

Ragland was expected to be a starter for the Bills as a rookie and was already drawing rave reviews for his performance on the practice field. Just one day before his injury, Bills head coach Rex Ryan called Ragland a “complete player” who just knows how to play the game.

The Cowboys don’t know what they’re going to do with Tony Romo

The Cowboys aren’t sure if they’ll put Tony Romo on injured reserve or keep him on the 53-man roster. Wait, why? There’s a chance Romo could return sooner than the 6-10 week window that’s been reported. He’s getting a second MRI, which should reveal more information about his status.

The Cowboys went 1-11 without Romo last season, which puts all the more pressure on Prescott to deliver. The team lost veteran backup Kellen Moore to a broken ankle early in training camp.

Sanchez is a turnover-prone quarterback Anquan Boldin Jersey who couldn’t earn the job in Denver. However, he’s a quarterback with plenty of starting experience and someone the Cowboys can at least win games with, so long as a grinding rushing attack and strong defense leads the way. Ideally though, Sanchez will never see the field in Dallas.

Though Harrison eventually capitulated, he gave the league the most public blowback. A frequent critic of Goodell — he’s called the commissioner Antwione Williams Jersey “the devil” — Harrison originally challenged league investigators to conduct the interview at his house. It wound up being held at the Steelers’ facility. The NFL found no new evidence during the interviews.

The accusations stem from an Al Jazeera America documentary titled The Dark Side, which features pharmacist Charlie Sly alleging he provided PEDs to a wide swath of American professional athletes. The biggest name Sly mentioned was Peyton Manning, whom Sly said received shipments of human growth hormone to his house under his wife’s name in 2011 while he was recovering from neck surgery.

After Manning cooperated with the league investigation, the NFL announced in July it couldn’t find any credible evidence that ties Manning to HGH or other banned substances.

Though Sly recanted his statements shortly after the video was released, the NFL still felt compelled to go forward with an investigation. It sets a scary precedent for players, who may now be forced to answer rumors at the behest of the league if they want to avoid disciplinary action. Yet in the wake of the NFL’s DeflateGate victory over Tom Brady, Goodell’s authority has never been stronger.

Carson Wentz did enough to beat the Bears 29-14 and get the Eagles to 2-0

Carson Wentz followed his exceptional Week 1 performance in Philadelphia’s win over the Cleveland Browns with another solid showing as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Chicago Bears with a final score of 29-14 on Monday Night Football.

Since 2012, each rookie Jeremiah Attaochu Jersey quarterback who started an NFL game in Week 1 regressed at least somewhat in their Week 2 performance. The same was true for Wentz, but he still played well enough to help the Eagles secure the victory.

Wentz completed 21 of 34 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown, which was a statistical decline from his Week 1 effort of 278 yards and two touchdowns. Still, Wentz’s performance was enough to get the job done despite taking a couple of Joe Barksdale Jersey big hits from Chicago’s defense.

Unfortunately, Minnesota’s defensive aggression also showed in the number of penalties it committed, which was a disadvantage for the Vikings. In the first quarter, Minnesota cornerback Terence Newman was flagged for a defensive pass interference penalty that gave the Packers 40 yards. Just one play later he was penalized again for defensive holding.

The Vikings kept rolling despite injuries to quarterback Sam Bradford, who returned to the game with a bruise on his non-throwing hand, and running back Adrian Peterson, who was ruled out of the game with a knee injury. Green Bay had been very successful in containing Peterson, limiting him to just 19 yards on 12 carries.

Despite the injury, Bradford finished the game with 286 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. It was the most passing yards by any starting Vikings quarterback in their debut with the team.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was also fundamentally important to Minnesota’s offensive success. Diggs contributed 182 receiving yards and one touchdown.

If the Vikings keep playing like this, especially on defense, they’ll certainly be able to hold their own.

He’s familiar with us. We’ve not had a discussion

PHOENIX — With the recent hiring of Molitor as manager, the Twins are looking for a bevy of coaches to fill out the staff. As it turns out, general manager Terry have a pitching coach right under the club’s own umbrella: fellow Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven. The always funny and loquacious Blyleven has been a Twins broadcaster since 1996. He entered the Hall 2011, his 14th year on the ballot. And during his 22-year League career, Blyleven played 11 seasons two stints for the Twins, inclusive of the 1987 team that defeated the Cardinals a seven-game World Series. Talk about homegrown talent., who is looking for everything except a hitting Wayne Gretzky Jersey coach at this point, wouldn’t discount the possibility of examining Blyleven. Everybody is fair game, I think. I ‘t think I should eliminate anybody, frankly, said on Tuesday during a media session at the General Managers Meetings.

He’s familiar with us. We’ve not had a discussion, but I’m not saying we won’t. We have a lot of guys who are interested this job. But there Amir Johnson Jersey is only one Blyleven. The only native of The Netherlands the hallowed Hall, Blyleven has been the pitching coach for the the last two World Baseball Classics — 2009 and ’13. The last time, his squad surprised many and advanced as far as the semifinals at San Francisco’s &T Park where they lost to the eventual champion Dominican Republic. Blyleven also managed the World the Futures Game this past during All- Game activities at Target Field — a 3 loss to the U.S. Blyleven loved both experiences and said last July that, at 63, he’d love to jump out of the booth and regularly offer his expertise on the field. God bless you, he said. I’ve never been offered that, I enjoy what I do on the broadcast side, but I also enjoy the teaching part. I feel like I have a lot to offer, but I offer it on the air right now, that’s fun. We’re talking about something that’s not there. Perhaps the opportunity now be there. How often does anyone baseball management have the chance of pairing a manager who smacked out 3 hits 21 seasons for three teams, including the Twins, with a pitcher who struck out 3 batters, fifth on the all-time list? is bringing back hitting coach and another former Twin, Brunansky, but like long-time manager Gardenhire, pitching coach Rick went out the door after last ‘s disappointing 70 finish. The Twins haven’t had a winning or made the playoffs since 2010, averaging 96 losses a year since then., who survived last year’s very serious bout with throat cancer, is intent on recapturing the old glory of six playoff slots nine seasons from 2002 through 2010. He knows that filling these coaching jobs are important to that task. Even though we’ve struggled of late there’s a lot of interest being with this club, said.

We should be on the upside. Hopefully our worst days be behind us and we’ll move forward. Ironically, we have some pitching that we’re encouraged about that’s on the surface. So whoever is, it’s going to be important. pitching has been ‘s clarion call since he returned to replace the dethroned Bill Smith after a 99-loss 2011. This past, had great success re-tooling former Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes, a free-agent signee who went from a 4 for New 2013 to a 16 this past. How did Hughes do it? His dipped from 5 to 3 and his WHIP from 1 to 1. His control became impeccable. Hughes walked only 16 batters 209 3 innings. At first glance, the change of home venues from hitting-friendly Yankee Stadium to pitching-rich Target Field would seem to have been a huge contributing factor, but take note that Hughes’ splits were a shade better on the road then they were at home. Hughes had a nice year, there’s no question, said. Out of the people we went out and signed from the free-agent market, he certainly did everything on his part to help us get better. We’ve got to do a few things with a few others. Pitching is always our problem. We scored enough runs. Our defense is pretty decent. Around the diamond we have almost everybody back. Our starting rotation is a problem again. It’s put us a hole too often we need to take a look at that rotation. The question then becomes simple: is Blyleven the guy to help put Humpty Dumpty back together again? His resume is impressive: 287 wins, 242 complete 685 starts — 60 of them shutouts — over 4 innings. If anyone understands the nuances of teaching the of starting pitching, Blyleven does. He’s got a great personality and a great sense of humor, said. But he knows exactly when to put his thumb down on things as well. I talk to him? I ‘t know about that. I’m open to anything. I’ve got a lot of other guys who want, too. Ultimately, I have to make a decision on how fast to move forward.
